Background of the Study
Social media has revolutionized the speed and reach of information dissemination; however, it has also become a fertile ground for the spread of fake news. In Ado-Ekiti, the pervasive use of platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp has contributed to an environment where misinformation can easily proliferate (Oluwatobi, 2023). Fake news on social media not only misguides public opinion but also undermines trust in credible sources of information (Afolabi, 2024). The rapid circulation of unverified content has serious implications for public discourse, political stability, and community cohesion (Babatunde, 2025). This study examines how social media contributes to the spread of fake news in Ado-Ekiti and explores the underlying mechanisms that facilitate this phenomenon. By analyzing user behavior and content circulation patterns, the research aims to identify effective countermeasures to curb misinformation online.

Statement of the Problem
The proliferation of fake news on social media poses significant challenges in Ado-Ekiti, affecting public trust and informed decision-making. Many residents struggle to differentiate between credible information and misinformation, leading to confusion and misinformed opinions (Ifeoma, 2023). This phenomenon undermines public discourse and hampers effective governance. The study seeks to identify the primary drivers behind the spread of fake news on social media and propose strategies to enhance information accuracy. Addressing these issues is crucial to restoring confidence in digital media and promoting a more informed public (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the extent of fake news spread via social media.

  2. To identify key factors contributing to the dissemination of fake news.

  3. To recommend strategies to mitigate the spread of misinformation.

Research Questions:

  1. How prevalent is fake news on social media in Ado-Ekiti?

  2. What factors contribute to the spread of misinformation?

  3. What strategies can effectively reduce the circulation of fake news?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Social media usage is positively correlated with the spread of fake news.

  2. Lack of digital literacy contributes significantly to misinformation.

  3. Implementing fact-checking measures reduces fake news circulation.

Significance of the Study
This study provides critical insights into the spread of fake news on social media and offers practical recommendations to improve information credibility. Its findings will aid policymakers, educators, and media organizations in developing effective strategies to combat misinformation and foster a more informed citizenry (Uche, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to social media platforms in Ado-Ekiti Local Government and focuses exclusively on the spread of fake news.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Fake News: Deliberately misleading or false information presented as news.

  • Social Media: Digital platforms used for sharing information and communication.

Digital Literacy: The ability to effectively navigate, evaluate, and create information using digital technologies
